Press Release

“CIRQUE X: ST. JAMES INFIRMARY’S 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY BENEFIT”
FRIDAY, JUNE 5TH 9:00pm-3:00am
PARADISE LOUNGE, 1501 FOLSOM STREET, SAN FRANCISCO

The St. James Infirmary is the first Occupational Health & Safety Clinic for Sex Workers and their partners in the United States. We offer free, confidential, nonjudgmental medical and social services for current and former Sex Workers of all genders. Since 1999, we have served over 2,600 Sex Workers and their partners in our clinic and thousands of sex workers during street and venue based activities. Annually we provide 8,000 clinic and venue based services, including primary medical care, transgender hormone care, acupuncture, massage, HIV/STI testing, hepatitis vaccines, counseling, food, clothing and other harm reduction services. We have also worked to develop leadership and capacity building skills in our community through internships, trainings, and apprenticeships.

We will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary this June, and are organizing an event to properly mark the occasion—“Cirque X!” Like many non-profit organizations in San Francisco, St. James Infirmary has recently suffered mid-year budget cuts from our City and State contracts, and there may be additional cuts in July. While these budget cuts threaten our services to the sex worker community, they have also provided us with the motivation to become creative in our fundraising. As pioneers in the sex worker community, St. James Infirmary has never been a stranger to adversity and struggles, and we are confident that we will make it through these trying times. So, our 10 year anniversary is both a celebration of our incredible achievements thus far, as well as an opportunity for our supporters to give back and help us stay open for at least another 10 years!

Cirque X is on Friday, June 5, 2009 at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco, and will be a night to remember with performances ranging from fire dances and aerial acrobatics to burlesque shows, strippers and porn stars, drag queens and fabulous DJs, and private dances in the V.I.P.
