Be Nice to Sex Workers

Report back from the North American Syringe Exchange Conference and the National Harm Reduction Conference in Austin, Texas: It was fun!!! The St. James crew spent the last week in Austin (Nov 16th-21st, 2010). We attended many fabulous workshops on harm reduction, syringe access, capacity building and reducing shame for sex workers and drug users. We also set up a fabulous merchandise & information table. We sold lots of our fabulous shirts, sweatshirts, posters and resource guides (If you did not get a chance to buy something, check out our store).  We met many fabulous people from the harm reduction community who are doing great work in public health and harm reduction.  We also got to reconnect with so many old friends.  Right across from our table we had Desiree Alliance, Sex Workers Outreach Project and HIPS.  If you have not had a chance to check out the new website for HIPS, you should do it now.
In addition to many wonderful presentations about sex work from other agencies, St. James staffers presented on drug use, sex work and stigma and led a workshop for organizations across the country on how to develop a bad date list for sex workers in their area.  We are looking forward to many more wonderful, sex worker led workshops next year at the HRC in Portland, Oregon.
