Who We Are

St. James Infirmary is a peer-based non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving Sex Workers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We are the first occupational health and safety clinic in the U.S. run by Sex Workers for Sex Workers!

Our History

St. James Infirmary was made possible because of the unique vision of Sex Worker rights activists from COYOTE (Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics) and the Exotic Dancers Alliance (EDA), and a timely event in the San Francisco County Jail.

In the late 90s, a local woman arrested for soliciting in San Francisco had her blood drawn in the jail without her consent and was not informed as to the nature of the test. Feeling violated, she called COYOTE for support. COYOTE and EDA members suggested to the San Francisco Department of Public Health STD Control and Prevention Section (also known as “City Clinic) that there was a much more efficient and compassionate way to address Sex Worker Health – creating St. James Infirmary. Our clinic is named after our honored Margo St. James—the sex worker, feminist, and activist who founded COYOTE in the early 70’s.

In June of 1999, COYOTE, EDA, and the SFDPH opened St. James Infirmary. Since then, St. James Infirmary has served thousands of Sex Workers and their partners. Each year we provide:

  •      ~1,000 medical services to over 300 unduplicated Sex Workers;
  •      ~2,500 contacts in our syringe distribution & collection program;
  •      ~ 3,000 street and venue based outreach contacts;
  •      Peer education and training workshops to over 250 Sex Workers.

We also provide presentations on sex work and harm reduction approaches to working with the vibrant and diverse Sex Worker community for medical and social service providers in the Bay Area. If you are interested in having us come to your agency and provide staff trainings, please contact us.
